What is the story behind the name of "Jinx", the NGINX mascot cat?

I’m curious: what is the origin of the name of the NGINX  mascot cat, Jinx? Thank you!

:sparkles: I’m happy to hear any fun history about the origins of the mascot! I know Jinx has been around since at least the first episode of The Engine Room.

Love this question!!! Jinx has been around for a while in different iterations, and we adopted him as our community mascot a while ago simply because we love him.

The history behind the name “Jinx”, to my understanding, is that it’s a play on the spelling and mispronunciation of NGINX. NGINX is often mispronounced as “N-JINX” so we had some fun with that.

Jinx has joined us on many adventures throughout the year; he learned to scuba dive for the NGINX Sprint conference in 2022, and was an astronaut before that. We hope he’ll stay our adventure buddy for years to come.

Here’s Jinx exploring the deep sea!

(We also have many cat lovers working on NGINX, but we swear we’re impartial  )

I do usually use NGINX; the first N is silent. Apparently, there was some confusion about the pronunciation early on, with some people saying “N-Jinx” rather than “N-Gin-X”. Given the playful nature of our mascot, it felt like Jinx was just the right name.

Jinx has also been in outer space, worked in the Engine Room, and chatted with computers (apparently, he knows Curl quite well).

And he’s a great conference attendee.
